Drakes Island Beach – Wells, Maine

Drake’s Island Beach in Wells, is a good dog friendly beach in Maine.  During low tide this long sandy beach offers plenty of space for dogs to run.  During high tide space is limited, but is a good place to walk your dog.  During the Summer Season between June 16 and September 15, dogs are allowed after 6:00 PM and before 8:00 AM.  Town ordinances require that dogs be on leash.  Parking is available at a small lot on Drake Island Road for a nominal fee.  This parking lot can be easily missed, so if you find yourself driving past Grasshopper Lane you have gone too far.

Located on the left side of the jetty from Wells Beach, if you walk towards the opposite side of the beach it ends at the Wells Reserve’s Laudholm Farm Beach and Rachael Carson National Wildlife Refuge.  Please note that dogs are not allowed on Laudholm Farm Beach, but can be walked on leash at the Rachael Carson Wildlife Refuge.  Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and limited public restrooms are available at the parking lot.  Interesting to note, on our visit we noticed many of the houses available for summer rentals were advertised as being dog friendly.
