Mitchell Field, Harpswell, ME

Mitchell Field in Harpswell, Maine is scenic spot with a dog friendly beach.  To be honest we stumbled on Mitchell Field by accident while looking for a place to picnic after enjoying some of the trails in the area.  We were pleasantly surprised by this approximately 120 acre park that offers trails, open fields and a small rocky beach.  This former US Navy fuel depot includes .75 miles of gravel trails that skirt the perimeter of the park and winds it’s way through wooded areas, two miles of paved walkway, open fields, and a small rocky beach.  Please be cautious though in the fields, as there are some areas with hidden concrete structures and pipes from when it was used by the Navy.  However, in the area directly across from the beach the field was obstacle free and a good spot to enjoy a game of fetch.  The beach is best visited during low tide for active pups who want to play, but there is also a small sandy area available during high tide.  The beach to the left of the closed pier is less rocky than the beach to the right of it.  We were told by the local dog owners we met there that on a clear day it is possible to see Mount Washington, and they strongly recommended visiting one of the many local restaurants to purchase lobster rolls for our picnic.

Dogs are allowed all day, and must be under owner’s control.  As always, please pick up after your pets.  Free parking is available along the paved portions of the park.  To reach the beach area, drive past the community garden and bandstand.  For more information on Mitchell Field, including directions, current weather conditions, and photos, please click here.  For additional information on our recommendations for Scenic Dog WalksDog Beaches and Trails in Maine, please visit our Dog Friendly Places page.  Harpswell, Maine is perfect for a dog day out adventure.  Next week we’ll be reviewing one of the many trails we visited that day!

Don’t let Chuck Billy’s grumpy expression fool you, he really did like this beach!

Mitchell Field is a great place for a picnic followed by a game of fetch.

Dogs are allowed off-leash on the beach, but we wanted to avoid soggy dogs today.
