Neighborhood Heroes

We saved a life on our morning walk!  Seriously, I saved a life!  We were on neighborhood patrol when out of the shadows came running a small dog.  We had never seen him before, and he was equally surprised to see us.  You know how excitable Jack Russell Terriers can be.  So despite it being early in the morning, he started barking, “Hey guys! Where are you going? I’m Butters! Let’s play!”  But then he ran out of his yard into the road!  AND there was a car nearing the blindspot on the crest of the hill!

Butters’ owner yelled desperately for him to come.  But to no avail.  Butters started running back and forth across the street barking at us…at a bird…at nothing at all, oblivious to the headlights barreling towards him.  I froze in fear.  Asa sat down.  But Dad, dressed in his reflective vest, stepped out into the middle of the road and got the driver’s attention.  The car slowed.  Then stopped as he saw the dog, just bigger than a squirrel, darting in and out of the road.

That’s when I jumped into action and dragged Dad and Asa out of the road and into the safety of the neighbor’s yard.  Luckily Butters followed, and his owner scooped him up.  Tragedy averted!  We all breathed a sigh of relief as Dad waved to the driver, and the car drove off into the darkness.  Butters just continued barking his cheery hellos, still oblivious over what just happened.  Our neighbor thanked us profusely, and told us that Butters recently joined their family.  Apparently, this was the first time Butters darted off like that, but his owner assured us that he would be putting up a fence to protect his enthusiastic new friend.  We wagged our tails to this news, welcomed Butters to the neighborhood and continued on our walk.  As we walked away all a bit rattled from what just transpired, we heard Butters’ barking drifting off into the distance, “Hey, Daddy let’s play! What’s that over there? Oh look a cat!”  Something tells me this won’t be the first time we have to rescue Butters.  But don’t worry, we’ll be on neighborhood patrol again tomorrow!

This is an old photo. Mom wouldn't let us recreate our dramatic rescue.
