Orris Falls, South Berwick, ME

Step back in time hiking with your dogs following an abandoned Colonial Road at Orris Falls, in Maine.  Located in the historical community of Tantic, the 171 acres Orris Falls Conservation Area in South Berwick straddles the North Berwick and Wells town lines.  This dog friendly hiking trail runs between Thurrell Road and Emery’s Bridge Road, and includes the foundation of the Littlefield Homestead, Lachance Point with views of Mt. Agamenticus, a Balancing Rock that inspired local folklore, and of course Orris Falls.

Trails are rudimentary, blazed or flagged and subject to seasonal closings to prevent erosion.  The majority of the land is wetlands, and home to beavers, endangered Blanding’s Turtles, wood ducks, and even a heron rookery.  Therefore dogs must remain on leash to respect the wildlife and natural habitats.  Also the ridge overlooking the falls is very steep and unsafe for curious canines.

The inspiration for Sarah Orne Jewett’s 1889 sketch, “The White Rose Road,” Orris Falls, owned by Great Works Regional Land Trust, is a unique hike for you and your dogs.  For directions and additional information including a trail map, Click Here.  To find out about other dog friendly hiking trails in Maine, please visit our Dog Friendly Places to Go page.
