Revolutionary Idea

Over the weekend, my family visited Fort McClary State Park for a picnic.  I must admit, when I arrived I was in a bad mood.  The Deer were in my yard again, and this time they were focusing their attention on eating all of my wild blueberries.  Why were we off having fun when my kingdom needed protecting?  As Mom droned on with her “fun” historical facts about Fort McClary, suddenly I had a revolutionary idea!  The solution to my Deer problem was right there in front of me – I NEED a cannon!

If I had a cannon I could defend my yard from my archenemies!  I can’t believe I never thought of this sooner.  In all the historical markers scattered about the park and blockhouse, not one mentioned Deer attacking the fort.  In fact, during our many visits, I’ve never seen any Deer at all on the grounds of this scenic park.  Clearly the cannons are the perfect defense to keep them away!  No more barking myself hoarse out the window!  No more long hours standing guard!  All I need to do is put a cannon in our living room pointed out our window.  Brilliant!

The cannons at Fort McClary aren’t even being used.  I wondered what it would take to convince the Maine State Parks to loan me one?  Actually the biggest hurdle will probably be convincing Mom to put one in the house.  But I’m sure with Dad’s help and Asa’s big brown pleading eyes, we can convince her.  I promise I won’t even fire it.  Just the mere sight of the cannon will make those Deer leave my precious apple trees and blueberries alone.  But before I enact my plan, I have to give Asa a lesson on safety…

Asa! You're looking in the wrong end!
