Short Sands Beach – York, Maine

In terms of dog friendly beaches in Maine, Short Sands Beach in York has both positive and negative attributes.  On the plus side dogs are allowed to run off leash under voice control between Sunrise and 8:00 AM during the summer season.  But the catch is they must be 10 feet away from other visitors, which is hard to manage on this small and often crowded beach.  They really meant it when they named it “short.”  There isn’t a lot of space to run.  However, if you are looking for a fun place to bring your entire family and where your dog can stretch his legs, this beach may be a good fit for you.

Short Sands Beach in York is a great family destination with a park, playground, and nearby restaurants, shops, and arcades.  But please note dogs must remain on leash at the park and are not allowed within the playground.  Between May 20 and September 20 dogs are allowed on the beach after 6:00 PM and before 8:00 AM.  As noted, between Sunrise and 8:00 AM dogs are permitted to run off leash, but must be leashed between 6:00 PM and Sunrise.  There is a large metered parking lot, public restrooms, and lifeguards are on duty during the Summer.  However, if given the choice Long Sands Beach just down the road is a better dog friendly beach in Maine for you to enjoy time with your dog.
