Up All Night

As Chuck Billy and I were getting ready for bed, I heard Mom ask Dad, “Is there anything out you think Asa will destroy?”  Dad replied, “We have to trust him at some point.”  Then he shut off the kitchen light and they headed upstairs.  They totally forgot to shut my crate door!  I was free to do as I want all night!

Excited by a night full of endless play, I tried to get Chuck Billy to wrestle with me.  He just grunted, and continued to circle on his mattress looking for a comfy spot to sleep.  Who needs him!  I can make my own fun!  I spied my squeaky ball under the kitchen table and pounced on it.  This was going to be the best night ever!  That is until I heard Mom’s footsteps on the stairs.  Surely she realized their mistake and was going to lock me in my crate for the night.  But much to my amazement, all she did was take my squeaky ball away, pet me on the head, and headed back upstairs.

Confused, I settled onto the nearest bed to chew my bone.  Was this some sort of a test?  I could hear Chuck Billy’s breathing in the darkness.  Clearly he was sound asleep, but I was too excited.  I tossed and turned on the bed a few times, changed to a different bed, then back to the first.  I even debated sleeping in my own crate, but decided that would be a waste of my new found independence.  At some point I drifted off to sleep.

Around midnight I was wide awake again, and decided that a game of bone hockey would be really fun.  You know that game, right?  It’s when you take your favorite Nylabone and drop it on the tile floor, and then chase it around flicking it with your nose and paws knocking it into walls and furniture.  Chuck Billy growled at me.  I heard the bedroom door open upstairs, and Dad yelled, “Knock it off!”  Busted again.  No worries, I was actually feeling sleepy.  So I curled up with Chuck Billy inside his crate and drifted off to sleep.  I awoke the next morning to praises from Mom and Dad, declaring me a “Good Boy!”  I passed the test!  I’m a big boy now!  I better go take a nap, because I have all sorts of fun things planned for tonight!
