Hide & Seek

Har, Har Mother Nature, very funny.  Today is the first day of Spring, despite the fact that temps are hovering just above freezing and there is snow in the forecast for this evening.  But you’re not fooling me.  You are playing Hide & Seek with Spring!  Game on!

As we headed outside, I told Asa to start digging in the snow to find grass.  Ok, I know with all the snow and ice that is an impossible task.  Not to mention I’m not sure Asa even knows what grass looks like.  But that will keep him busy while I start the real search for Spring.  First I inspected the sunny side of the house to see if the tulip bulbs Mom planted last fall had started to sprout.  No luck there, but then again Mom was never known for her green thumb.  Then I scanned the skies for Robins returning from their winter vacation.  No luck there either, but I did meet a very friendly Canadian Goose who thought the current weather was wonderful.  Silly Goose!

Realizing my backyard search wasn’t going anywhere, and knowing that Mother Nature likes a good challenge, I leashed up my Dad and headed out to look for clues.  We walked pass the baseball field, all covered in snow.  No big deal, baseball players are known as “the boys of Summer” not Spring.  Next I headed towards the pond.  Surely there would be mud there to roll in!  But alas, no luck there either.  It was frozen solid.  Then when returning home feeling absolutely defeated, I finally saw the first true “sign” of Spring in Maine – our road was posted for Frost Heaves!  With a satisfying sense of accomplishment, I told Asa he could stop digging.  We won this round of Hide & Seek with Mother Nature!  Well played Mother Nature!  Well Played!

Hello Spring, are you down there?
