Fort Point State Park in Stockton Springs, Maine occupies a peninsula with panoramic views of the Penobscot River and Penobscot Bay, and includes the historic site of Fort Pownall, scenic Fort Point Lighthouse, a small beach area, and a pier that extends 200 feet into river making it an interesting dog friendly place to spend the day.

Fort Pownall was constructed in 1759 to protect the English landholdings during the French and Indian War.  The fort, shaped like a four point star, was surrounded by a palisade, ditch, and large earthen bank.  However, soon after the fort was built, the French fell to the English during the Battle of Quebec.  Therefore, Fort Pownall never did get to fulfill its military mission.  On the eve of the American Revolution, in 1775 the British seized the fort’s guns to keep them out of the rebels’ hands.  In retaliation, the colonists burned the blockhouse and filled the moat preventing British occupation during the war.  Today all that remains of the fort is the stone wall footprint and earthwork mounds, with historical markers describing these events in detail.  A lighthouse was erected at this point in 1836, and was the first river lighthouse in Maine.  The current Fort Point Light was built in 1857, and although it is now automated it continues to guide mariners from this historic site.

Fort Point State Park is 120 acres with an approximately 1 mile scenic trail, as well as a small rocky sand bar perfect for dogs to stretch their legs and explore.  Please note there is NO swimming allowed due to the strong current of the Penobscot River.  Throughout the park are picnic areas, and scenic overlooks to enjoy.

Dogs are allowed on-leash.  The park is open between May and October, but visitors are also welcome to enjoy the park during the off-season too.  There is a small nominal entrance fee.

Turn onto W. Main Street from Route 1 in Stockton Springs. Then turn down Cape Jellison Road, which makes a loop around the point. You can access the park from the state park road or from Lighthouse Road.

When visiting during the off-season, please do not block the gate.
