Maine’s Siren Song

In Greek mythology the Sirens were dangerous creatures, who lured sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast.  However, did you know Maine has it’s own version of the Sirens, leading innocent Dogs to fall off rocky cliffs?  Recently during our hike at the Devil’s Back Trail in Harpswell, my little brother Asa almost fell victim to these menacing creatures, also known as Chipmunks.

There we were enjoying a nice hike with scenic overlooks.  However, rather than focusing on the view, I should have been more attentive to Asa.  As we walked through the woods we were surrounded by the sounds of Chipmunks chattering in the trees.  Little did I realize Asa was slowly falling under their spell.

One look at Asa’s face, and I would have known he was succumbing to the Sirens’ song.

Suddenly a Chipmunk darted out, chattering her Siren Song.  Asa couldn’t resist and started to chase her…towards a steep drop-off…with me and Dad in tow tethered to Asa on our leash!  Luckily I was able to dig my paws in and stop our certain plunge towards death.  Ok, so Dad may have helped too.  Mom’s scream of “STOP!” certainly didn’t help.  But it did get Asa’s attention and broke the spell.  Tragedy averted.

Where we almost met our demise lured off a cliff by a Chipmunk.

We all breathed a sigh of relief, and headed out of the woods.  Good thing too, because I was beginning to fall under the spell of Maine’s Siren Song.  Dogs, please remember this cautionary tale before heading off into the Maine woods.  Chipmunks will lure you to your death!

Even the most seasoned Dogs have trouble resisting Maine’s Siren Song.
