Thank You Dog Mountain

Dog Mountain, Home of Stephen Huneck Gallery, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, graciously hosts the New England Golden Jubilee every May. But did you know that you can visit this dog paradise any day of the year? While I continue to organize my thoughts and photos from this year’s jubilee, please take a moment to read our 2017 review of our first visit to the most dog friendly place we know!

Consisting of 150 acres on a mountain top, Dog Mountain has trails, fields, and a pond for dogs and their humans to enjoy year round.  There are over two miles of trails through wildflower fields and dense forest, with whimsical touches of Stephen Huneck’s art nestled along the way.  The fields are a great place to enjoy fetch surrounded by beautiful views, and the pond is always a favorite destination for dogs.

In addition to the tail wagging fun, Dog Mountain is also a sacred place to remember fur friends who have crossed Rainbow Bridge.  The walls of Dog Chapel are covered with tributes to pets who have left paw prints on their owners’ hearts.  Although emotional to view the countless messages of love and devotion, a visit to Dog Chapel is also uplifting.  Huneck wanted his chapel to not only be a place to grieve, but also a place to celebrate the beautiful bond between dogs and their owners.  Furthermore, Huneck wanted Dog Mountain to be a place where dogs would have “the most fun they possibly could.”  A goal he achieved in his brief life, and is carried on today through the work of Friends of Dog Mountain.

There is no leash law at Dog Mountain.  There is no admission fee.  Dogs are free to run, play, and swim.  Dog Mountain and Dog Chapel are solely supported through the sale of Stephen Huneck’s art and donations to this dog paradise.  For more information, including events, directions and dog friendly places to stay in the area, please visit dogmt.com.
