Mom and Dad went to Star Island without us! I know, crazy right? After all it is our namesakes who once lived at the Isles of Shoals. We should be welcomed as honored guests! But for some reason the ferry doesn’t allow dogs. That left us with no other option but to go pirate.
Luckily for us, Sail Portsmouth was taking place this weekend. So we had plenty of pirate ships to choose from for our adventure. In fact, commandeering a ship proved to be much easier than expected. It is amazing what Asa can get away with due to his puppy charm and big brown eyes. However, sailing that ship was much harder than anticipated. Pirates make it look so easy in the movies! The following sea chanty is our tale of adventure…as sung to the tune of Gilligan’s Island, of course!
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of two Golden Retrievers,
That started from this New Hampshire port,
Aboard this mighty ship.
The mate was a silly puppy dog,
The skipper brave and bold.
To the Shoals they set sail that day,
So they could take a tour,
So they could take a tour.
They knew that sailing would be tough,
They never sailed a ship,
Despite the warnings of the GPS,
The two dogs got lost,
The two dogs got lost.
The ship drifted around Portsmouth Harbor,
And past a few old forts,
Past lobster boats,
And buoys too,
A sea lion and a gull,
Headed for Star Island!
Ok, so we’re not pirates. Despite our namesakes being being sailors, it took us a lot longer to reach Star Island than we anticipated. How were we suppose to know if we put the sails down the boat would go faster? Also how the heck do you steer this thing anyways? By the time we reached our destination it was long past our dinner time. And as everyone knows, a hungry dog is an irritable dog. So we turned around and headed back, vowing that next time we’d convince Mom and Dad to break the rules and take us on the ferry! Argh Matey!
