The Anvil Trail on Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Harbor, Maine is a challenging dog friendly hike with breathtaking views. Part of Acadia National Park, the Anvil Trail is a difficult hike with rocky and steep sections up the southeastern side of Schoodic Head. This in and out trail is approximately 1.1 miles, and leads to a scenic overlook at a rock outcropping known as “the anvil,” and the 440-foot Schoodic Head. On a clear day there are views of Champlain Mountain and Cadillac Mountain, and if the weather really cooperates you can even see the Petit Manan Lighthouse. Anvil Trail is part of a network of hiking trails across the length of Schoodic Peninsula that range from easy to difficult.
Dogs are allowed on-leash. Please be aware though this trail is very challenging and should only be attempted with dogs accustomed to hiking. Parking is available in a lot at Blueberry Hill, with a smaller overflow lot just down the road. Directly across the street from the Blueberry Hill parking lot is the trailhead for Alder Trail, and the Anvil trailhead can be found a few feet up the road. After conquering Anvil, we highly recommend taking a break on the coastal headlands at the Blueberry Hill parking area overlooking the ocean.
Please Note: Acadia National Park passes are needed to access the Anvil Trail from May through October, but are not available for sale at the parking area. To purchase a park pass please visit the National Park Service.
