Birch Point Beach, Owls Head, ME

So close and yet so far is a good way to describe Birch Point Beach State Park in Owls Head, Maine. The sandy beach is so close, but dogs are not permitted on it during the summer season. Instead dogs are allowed year round on the rocky outcroppings on either side of the crescent shaped beach. At each end of the beach, there are short paths with rocks to explore, sweeping views of Penobscot Bay, and quiet picnic areas for you and your dog to enjoy.

Dogs are not allowed on Birch Point Beach between April 1 and September 30. Yet they are allowed to enjoy the park area year round. Dogs must be on-leash, and cannot be left unattended at the park. This popular Maine state park is located in Owls Head off of Ballyhac Road. There is a large parking lot available during the summer season, and in the off-season guests are permitted to park outside of the gate and walk on the access road to the beach.

On the day we visited, we enjoyed exploring the rocks, and it gave us a good place to stretch our dogs’ legs before visiting Owls Head Light. For Dog Beaches that permit pets during the summer season, please visit our Dog Friendly Places recommendations.
