Bog Brook Cove Preserve at Moose Cove in Trescott, Maine

Choose your own adventure at Bog Brook Cove Preserve at Moose Cove in Trescott, Maine. Trails range from an easy Universally-Accessible Trail, to a moderate coastal hike along the Chimney Trail, or explore the difficult Ridge Trail for breathtaking views.

Our adventure began heading to the trailhead at the north lot. To reach the parking area you must drive through privately owned wild blueberry barrens. Please enjoy the ride on this winding dirt road, but do not disturb or pick the blueberries. At the trailhead we first walked the 0.2 mile Universally-Accessible Trail, which led to a scenic overlook near the shoreline. This wide, well-groomed trail has a bench at the end, with a beautiful view of Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, Canada.

From there we ventured down to the rocky beach to get an up-close view of Maine’s rugged coastline. We then followed the natural curve of the beach, to find more scenic outlooks, as well as the trailhead to the .7 mile Chimney Trail. However, that trail took us inland away from the coastal views, so we quickly turned around and backtracked to the reach the trailhead for the Ridge Trail.

The Ridge Trail is not recommended for all dogs. It is a difficult climb, and even seasoned hikers such as Asa and myself needed help getting over the rocky outcroppings in a few areas. However, once again, our efforts were rewarded with sweeping views of the Bold Coast of Maine. The Ridge Trail is 2.3 miles round trip.

We ended our adventure here, but for those who want to keep exploring the Bog Brook Cove Preserve, there is an additional trail to explore from the south parking lot in Cutler. There the Norse Pond Loop will take you to Bog Brook Cove beach where there are unusual rock formations visible at low tide.

Dogs are allowed under control. As always clean up after your dog, and do not disturb the wildlife that call this area home. Please note that during the blueberry harvesting season there may be some loud noises from the machinery being used. Parking for the north lot where we explored is available on Moose River Road in Trescott. This road begins as pavement, but becomes a rough gravel road. Bog Brook Cove Preserve is maintained by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
