Take a quiet wooded hike at Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve in Kittery, Maine. Located on approximately 60 acres, this 1.5 mile easy walk takes you through dense forest, past wetlands, and over vernal pools, with historic stonewalls crisscrossing the path, reminding you of its early farming history. Easy to follow, 1.5 mile loop trail.
With benches along the way for bird watching or if you’re extra quiet you may spot a deer or two!
On the day we visited conditions were dry on the trail. But in a normal season there are water crossings, especially in the spring.
Fun Fact: 2022 marks Kittery’s 375th Anniversary. The first recorded reference to “Brave Boat Harbor” was in 1645. It is believed early settlers called it that because the main channel is not deep and is difficult to enter especially during low tide when the surf is rolling. Some of the earliest settlers lived in the area of Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve.
