Buck’s Ledge Community Forest, Woodstock, Maine

Buck’s Ledge Community Forest in Woodstock, Maine offers over six miles of trails that connect Buck’s Ledge with Lapham Ledge and the summit of Moody Mountain, with views of the Mahoosuc and Presidential Ranges. After years of fundraising and negotiations, the town of Woodstock acquired this property in 2022, and it is truly a community forest that welcomes all to its dog friendly trails which are moderate to difficult in places.

Dogs are allowed on-leash, and must be picked up after. Also please respect the wildlife that call this area home. The trails are marked, but it is advised to snap a photo of the trail map at the kiosk. Parking can be found at 274 North Main Street (Route 26), in Woodstock, Maine, and there is an EV charging station.

On the day we visited the weather got the better of us. What started as a cool day, quickly turned hot and humid after a passing shower. So we didn’t explore the full length of the trails to get to the ledge views. We did however enjoy our hike along the Lapham Loop, which was a little over a mile.

We began our hike at the kiosk with the beautiful art installation created by Telstar Middle and High School students that “Welcome All” to the Buck’s Ledge Community Forest.

From the gravel logging road, we took the first trail on the right which is Lapham Loop. There we found what is the cutest water crossing we’ve ever seen on all of our hikes.

The trail was steep in places, but felt cool in the dense forest shaded from the sun.

But we were reminded of the heat of the day in the more open spaces, which slowed Mom’s pace.

There were interesting rock formations to explore…

…And obstructed views tempting us at the trail junction to continue from Lapham Loop to the Lapham Ledge, for a much better view.

However knowing our limits in the heat and humidity, we hiked back to our car instead, with promises to return another day to finish our exploration of the Buck’s Ledge Community Forest!

Please join us next week as we continue Asa’s World Tour of Maine!
