I’m pleased to say that this year we’re having the best harvest yet for Dad’s little garden. That hasn’t always been the case. We still laugh about the year that Dad accidentally planted “Magic Beans.” So for those not familiar with my tale of Chuck Billy and the Beanstalk, let me re-share this post from September 2015.
Magic Beans Do exist (September 14, 2015)
Back in the Spring Dad planted a box garden. Well as predicted by me, it didn’t grow any boxes. But shockingly he did grow magic beans! I had joked about that, but who knew it would actually happen? The green beans he planted turned into huge flowers that tower over my head. Mom says that Dad must have mislabeled the seedlings he started on the windowsill, and planted sunflowers seeds in the box garden by mistake. But Dad insists he didn’t, and Dad is never wrong. So that only leaves one logical conclusion – He planted magic beans!
Troubled by the height of these plants I Googled “magic beans,” and discovered something similar happened to some guy named Jack. Now in Jack’s case, the beans grew all the way past the clouds to a magic kingdom where a Giant lived, and that Giant used the beanstalk to come down to Jack’s house. But Jack sounded like a real jerk because he stole from the Giant. So I’m hoping if we leave the Giant alone, he’ll leave us alone. Problem is, Asa can’t resist stealing socks, so I better keep an eye on him!
2019 Update: In case anyone is wondering, Dad never attempted to plant beans after that first failed attempt. But we are looking forward to our sunflowers blossoming again this year. And as always, I will be on the lookout for giants!
