Cinderella’s Maine Vacation

It’s no surprise that movie stars, TV stars, writers, artists and lots of other celebrities enjoy vacationing in Maine during the summer months. Susan Sarandon spends her downtime on Mount Desert Island, Patrick Dempsey is often seen peddling his bike along Maine’s scenic coastal roads, and just this past summer Ben Stiller enjoyed coffee and a conversation in Portland. However, what is a surprise is when celebrities choose to visit Maine during the cold winter months. Case in point, Cinderella recently spent a fairy tale weekend in Maine! Ok, I admit we didn’t actually see her. But she left behind telltale clues that she was visiting one of our favorite beaches.

As you may have heard, this past weekend brought with it unusually warm temperatures for winter in Maine. Therefore, our beaches were bustling with activity, that even myself and Asa couldn’t resist. That’s when we happened to stumble upon the traces left behind of Cinderella’s visit.

I admit, despite being a great detective, even I was confused by the first pieces of evidence. There were random gourds and pumpkins scattered along the shoreline. In all my years of walking on the beach, I’ve never seen pumpkins before! At first I theorized perhaps they washed up from Damariscotta’s Pumpkinboat Regatta held this past October. However, it didn’t take me long to realize these gourds were much too small to be used as boats for humans.

Our first clue that something strange and magical happened here.

Puzzled, we continued our walk along the beach, and that’s when I came across our biggest clue; literally, our biggest clue. We found the largest fairy house that Asa and I have ever seen. Trust me, Asa and I often see fairy houses on our hiking adventures, but it is rare to find one on the beach, and even rarer to find one anywhere near this size. This wasn’t a house for ordinary fairies. This was a house fit for a Fairy Godmother!

Asa, whatever you do, don’t even think about stealing a souvenir stick from the Fairy Godmother’s house!

That’s when it finally all made sense! Cinderella must have been vacationing in Maine this weekend! The evidence is irrefutable! It is very difficult to find a large pumpkin in January in Maine. Therefore Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother must have pieced together her pumpkin coach using a variety of smaller gourds that she purchased at Portland’s winter farmer’s market. As for the fairy house, who can blame her Fairy Godmother for wanting to relax and enjoy the view after getting Cinderella ready for her visit. The only question that remains to be answered is what event did Cinderella attend while here? Could she have simply arrived early for the annual Winter Beach Ball held in Bangor? Or perhaps Cinderella got her dates confused and missed the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge in Kennebunk? Either way, just like the other big celebrities who visit our state, we hope Cinderella enjoyed her Maine vacation.

Asa, if you promise not to get starstruck and be embarrassing, we can wait here to see if Cinderella or her Fairy Godmother return.
