The Devil’s Back Trail in Harpswell, Maine is a scenic dog friendly hike on Orr’s Island. Composed of two parcels of land on either side of the road, the Devil’s Back is approximately 36 acres with two loop trails. The East Trail, adjacent to the parking lot, is the newer of the two, and just opened in the summer of 2016. It goes through dense forest with scenic overlooks, and leads to Gun Point Cove, with views of Seal Rock. The East Trail does have some steep drop-offs and is a moderate hike. On the opposite side of the road is the West Trail. This trail is an easier hike through old growth pine trees and leads to beautiful water views at Long Cove. Both trails are well marked, and approximately 2 miles total. During low tide it is possible to explore the rocky shoreline on either trail. As for the name, although it was fun discussing during our hike whether it’s name meant the Devil came back on this trail, we later learned it is named for the spine of land where the road is located.
Dogs are allowed under owner’s control. We kept our dogs on-leash for this hike because there were a few steep drops. There is a parking lot at the East Trailhead.
