Asa here. I can’t believe I missed my opportunity to definitively prove to Chuck Billy that I’m a Dire Wolf!  Ever since I was a puppy, I knew I was more than just a ruggedly handsome Golden Retriever.  I’m a Dire Wolf, the fierce prehistoric wolf of legendary fame on HBO!  However, despite all my evidence, Chuck Billy continues to not believe me.  So you can’t begin to understand how excited I was when I learned that the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) is hosting a Doggie DNA Day.  I’m one swab away from proving my destiny!

For weeks I dreamed about the look on Chuck Billy’s face when he read the results of my DNA test.  How could he possibly argue with science?  ARLGP is working with Wisdom Panel, a leading advocate in the field of genetics ever since the initial canine genomics project in 1999.  Since then the Wisdom Panel features the largest breed database on the market, with more than 250 breeds, types and varieties. Their patented technology has helped more than 650,000 dogs learn valuable information about their identity as well as contribute to the research and detection of diseases in all dogs.  Surely they know a Dire Wolf when they see one’s DNA!

But alas, all my hopes and dreams came crashing down around me.  I called to register too late and the event is full!  I debated begging to squeeze me in for an appointment.  After all just think of the great publicity it would be for ARLGP if they discovered a Dire Wolf living in Maine!  However, I realized it wouldn’t be fair to the dogs who did register.  Not all dogs are as lucky as me to know who they truly are, and they need this DNA test.  Besides, I shouldn’t have wasted time daydreaming.  I should have registered to attend the day this event was announced.  Paws crossed due to the popularity of Doggie DNA Day, the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland will host it again.  Until then I will continue to wait to fulfill my destiny and definitively prove to Chuck Billy that I am indeed a Dire Wolf!
