Ok, I admit it, I’ve been a little lazy when it comes to homeschooling Asa. So he may have forgotten a lesson or two. However, I never realized how out of touch he was getting with his inner Wolf until he insisted on bringing his squeaky toy on a hike with us! It didn’t even cross Asa’s mind how silly he looked! Instead, he was more concerned with going on an adventure with Mr. Hedgehog. Disgusted, I instantly wrestled the toy away from Asa, and made Mom put it into her backpack. Silly me thought by this age Asa would have outgrown his puppy ways. Besides, it was Asa who proclaimed at a young age that he would grow up to be a Dire Wolf. What happened to that pledge?
Still brooding from Asa’s immaturity, while on a recent trip to Massachusetts we drove by the solution to all of my problems! Clearly, Asa wasn’t listening to me. I needed to send him to Wolf school! And lo and behold there it was! Located in Ipswich, Massachusetts is Wolf Hollow, who’s mission is the “preservation of the Wolf in the wild through education and exposure.” That’s it! One week there and my little brother will finally learn to be a Wolf!
However, once again Mom disagreed. According to her, Wolf Hollow is an educational facility designed to teach humans about the North American Gray Wolf. Their goal is to educate people, not Dogs, about the important role Wolves play in the environment; the dynamics and hierarchy of Wolf packs; and how Wolves are still a threatened species who need our help. According to Mom, they are open on weekends, and the Wolves are there to educate humans. Adding insult to injury, Mom also said that the Wolves don’t take very kindly to being gawked at by Dogs. At least that’s better than what Dad said to us, “They’re all gonna laugh at you.” He may have a point though. Asa is really embarassing.
Well it doesn’t look like I’ll be enrolling Asa into Wolf school anytime soon. However, if you happen to find yourself driving through Ipswich, it may be worth visiting Wolf Hollow. In the meantime, I will continue homeschooling Asa. I guess that’s ok though. After all Asa isn’t your run-of-the-mill Wolf, behind that goofy exterior he’s a Dire Wolf!
