Dog Mountain, St. Johnsbury, VT

Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Vermont is the most dog friendly place we’ve ever visited!  Home of the Stephen Huneck Gallery, Dog Mountain is 150 acres on a mountain top with trails, ponds, and fields for dogs and their humans to enjoy year round.  There are over two miles of trails through wildflower fields, dense forest and scenic vistas, with whimsical touches of Stephen Huneck’s art nestled along the way.  The fields are a great place to enjoy fetch surrounded by beautiful views, and the pond is always a favorite destination for visiting dogs.  There is also an agility course available for all dogs to try from amateurs to seasoned professionals.

Dog Mountain is a sacred place to remember fur friends who have crossed Rainbow Bridge.  As Stephen Huneck reflected, “As soon as the Dog Chapel was open to the public, I invited everyone who came to visit to put up a photo of their departed dog and to write a few sentences about what their dog meant to them…I never anticipated the whole building – every single space – covered with photos and words of remembrance, as the chapel is today.”  Although emotional to view the countless messages of love and devotion, a visit to Dog Chapel is also uplifting.  Huneck wanted his chapel to not only be a place to grieve, but also a place to celebrate the beautiful bond between dogs and their owners.  Huneck wanted dogs to have the most fun they possibly could.”  A goal he achieved in his brief life, and is carried on today through the work of Friends of Dog Mountain.

There is no leash law at Dog Mountain.  Dogs are free to run, play, and swim.  To plan your visit, including directions, weather forecast, photos and video highlights from our visit, click here.  Dog Mountain and Dog Chapel are solely supported through the sale of Stephen Huneck’s art and donations.  Your donations are greatly appreciated to support this dog paradise.
