The Eastern Trail is a great place to walk your dog in Maine. Stretching from Casco Bay in South Portland, ME to the Piscataqua River in Kittery, the Eastern Trail is part of the East Coast Greenway a 2,900 mile network from Maine to Florida. Although I’m sure Chuck Billy and Asa would love to walk it all. Today we will focus on the Kennebunk to Biddeford stretch.
The Kennebunk to Biddeford section offers 6 miles of scenic easy walking. The crushed stone / hard packed stone dust path is good for dog’s paws on a warm summer day, with occasional stretches of pavement. One aspect we like is the path is wood-lined and thus making it shady and comfortable. Winding along former sections of the Eastern Railroad, this trail takes you past wooded vistas, over rivers, and interestingly enough over the Maine Turnpike on a footbridge! Our dogs were a bit skittish at first by the sound of the Interstate 95 traffic rushing below them, but quickly became intrigued by the unique perspective of being able to look down at the passing vehicles. On this trip we only walked as far as Arundel, stopping along the way to relax on a bench provided by that town. This is a very popular area for walking, jogging and biking. Free Parking is available at Kennebunk Elementary School, located off ME Route 35 approximately 0.6 miles north of I-95 Exit 25 in Kennebunk. The trailhead can also be accessed from multiple points along the trail. For more information on planning your visit, including weather and map, Click Here.
Also be sure to check back because we will be adding more reviews of the Eastern Trail continuing on the Biddeford Stretch, as well as the Scarborough to Saco section, and the South Portland portion of the trail.
