Emmons Preserve in Kennebunkport, Maine offers approximately 2 miles of educational dog friendly hiking. Maintained by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Emmons Preserve consists of four trails with scenic overlooks and historic sites. On the day we visited we hiked the Batson River Trail and the Learning Trail which features signage with information on the environment and the historical landscape, covering a variety of topics including how to read the landscape, identifying the flora and fauna, and the Great Fire of 1947. There was even a sign with QR codes to help you identify the chirping birds.
Dogs are allowed off-leash under voice control. Please note we were surprised that the noise and vibrations of the metal Batson River Bridge bothered our usually unflinching dogs. But once the bridge was crossed the well maintained trails offer a great hike for dogs. Parking is available at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust headquarters, which hosts educational programs for children, events for nonprofits, and private functions. If an event is taking place, please be respectful and leash your dog while walking to the trailhead. To extend your hike, we recommend following the Batson River Trail to the adjacent Tyler Brook Preserve for an approximately three mile hike.
