Asa here. To celebrate the arrival of Mud Season in Maine, I would like to share with you my favorite muddy hikes! Nothing beats the feel of mud between the paws, and after a long winter of being cooped up inside, who can resist a good roll in that sweet smelling goo! To learn more about these locations, please click on the highlighted name. Or if your human isn’t as fond of mud as you are, please visit our Dog Friendly Places page for some cleaner adventures this spring.
Secret Garden, Kennebunk, ME: Nestled behind the Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine, is a muddy dog paradise at The Secret Garden. Although the name conjures up images from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel about an English garden, there isn’t one at The Secret Garden Preserve. What it does offer is a hidden oasis for hiking just minutes from the busy downtown, with approximately 40 acres of forest and wetlands. The 1.5 mile trail winds it way through forest, ferns, and marshes, with bridges for traversing the more boggy areas.
Tyler Brook, Kennebunkport, ME: Looking for the perfect muddy hike after the spring thaw? I recommend the Tyler Brook Preserve in Kennebunkport. This 1.3 mile trail winds its way through dense forest, open meadows, and wetlands. Extend your muddy paws adventure by visiting the adjacent Emmons Preserve. Please note this trail does include a road crossing.
Cliff Trail, Harpswell, ME: With scenic overlooks called “Henry Creek Lookout” and “Strawberry Cascade,” the Cliff Trail in Harpswell, Maine is a mud lovers paradise! Located in a submerged valley, this hike offers trails through dense forrest, wetlands, and mudflats, with a scenic cliff view. As an added bonus, there is also a designated area for Fairy Houses, so you can check out these unique homes, and perhaps make a new friend!
