Celebrate the New Year by going on a hike with your dog! On January 1, 2020 State Parks across the country will be participating in First Day Hikes. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outside. On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states.
So start off the New Year on the right paw by going on an outdoor adventure. Throughout the day, park rangers, naturalists and volunteers will be sharing their knowledge of each park’s unique features and history. Last year approximately 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country on the guided hikes, and many others explored State Park trails throughout the day on their own.
The guided hikes are FREE! To find a participating State Park near you, please visit First Day Hikes. There you will find an interactive map listing all the activities in your area. Most of these events are dog friendly, requiring dogs to be on leash. However, before heading out be sure to check the individual listings, because there are a few that dogs are not allowed. And don’t forget to share your adventure on social media with #FirstDayHikes!
Each year this event gets bigger and better with more parks added. In addition to the interactive map of the country, you can find additional information on state park websites, including MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, and MASSACHUSETTS.
Here are a few helpful tips to make your day enjoyable:
- Please remember to check the weather prior to the event.
- All hikes will be rain, snow, or shine.
- Dress in layers appropriate for the winter weather, including a hat, and wear appropriate footwear.
- Traction devices such as micro spikes or yaktrax are highly recommended (trails may be icy).
- Be sure to pack water and a snack for during the hike. Some of the locations will also provide a warm drink and healthy snack at the completion of the hike.
