It has been a long year for all of us. So why not breathe in the fresh air and start 2021 on the right paw with a First Week Hike! Traditionally these have been guided tours at state parks across the country on January 1st. But this year, as with everything else, things are a bit different. State Parks across the country are encouraging people to go on a self-guided tour and share their experiences on social media. Some states are even offering prizes! Other states are encouraging you to learn more about the state by taking virtual online hikes. All are asking that you follow social distancing and Covid-19 guidelines, and as always be sure to confirm dogs are allowed at specific locations before heading out.
In Maine they have created virtual hikes for January 1, 2021. Visit Maine.gov to go on a virtual hike with videos of Governor Janet Mills, or with adventure expert, Aislinn Sarnacki. Their site also includes additional information such as trail maps if you want to go on a self-guided hike.
New Hampshire is encouraging people to share their self-guided hikes to win prizes, including a family season pass for 2021! They’ll be giving away NH swag for the best photos in many categories, including Best Pet, Best Family, Best Natural Feature, etc. In order to be considered follow @nhstateparks on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, and use the hashtags #FirstDayHikes and #NHStateParks. But there’s a catch! Pictures must be taken at one of the NH state park properties between December 26, 2020 – January 1, 2021. Visit NHStateParks.org for all the details and suggestions of places to visit.
Massachusetts is also encouraging families and pets to take a self-guided hike in the days leading up to January 1, 2021. In fact, they’ve listed over 60 places to visit on their site Mass.gov. Be sure to use #MASSDCR and #MAFirstWeekHikes to share where you’ve been!
To those who live outside of our area, please visit StateParks.org to find what activities are going on in your part of the country!
