Fort McClary State Park, located in Kittery, Maine is a good dog friendly place to visit.  Since 1689 this site has been used to protect the Piscataqua River and surrounding communities in Maine and New Hampshire.  Today Fort McClary offers historic buildings to explore and scenic views of the harbor.  Often less crowded than more popular tourist destinations, we enjoy taking our dogs there to walk and then relaxing with a picnic.  There is also a Harbor Trail, but the name is misleading as it takes you to busy Route 103, and is not well maintained.

Dogs must remain on leash.  The park is open 9:00 AM to Sunset Memorial Day through Columbus Day.  There is limited parking at the fort, with additional parking and playground located across the street.  Public restrooms are also available.  Admission is $2.00 for adult Maine residents, $3.00 for non-residents, and $1.oo for children age 5 to 11.

We also enjoy attending events at Fort McClary with our dogs.  In June they host a French & Indian War Encampment, coming up this weekend on July 11, 2015 is the Friends of Fort McClary Music Fest, and in August there will be a Revolutionary War Encampment.  Proceeds from these events are used to help restoration efforts.  Please note though, if your dog is skittish around loud noises the encampments may not be suitable to attend because there will be musket and canon demonstrations.  For more information on events, please visit Friends of Fort McClary.
