French Mountain, Rome, Maine

They say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” So in Rome, Maine, that means taking a hike up French Mountain. Maintained by the 7 Lakes Alliance, this dog friendly hike is moderate on the paws with spectacular views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. At an elevation of 716 feet, the loop trail is just under a mile and is well marked with blue blazes.

On the day we visited, we began our hike to the left of the kiosk.

As the dense forest canopy opened near the summit, it began to reveal breathtaking views.

Did I mention the views?

The summit of French Mountain is a great place to do bird watching, marvel at the scenery, or simply relax and daydream.

We then continued on the loop trail, back to the parking area.

Dogs are allowed on-leash at French Mountain, in Rome, Maine. Always cleanup and carry out pet waste, and be courteous to your fellow hikers. There is a small parking area on Watson Pond Road. Additional parking is available along the road, but please be respectful of the neighbors. For more information to plan your visit, go to 7 Lakes Alliance’s French Mountain Trail.
