Ghost Meadow Commons, Wells, Maine

Spoiler alert – Ghost sightings are NOT common at Ghost Meadow Wildlife Commons in Wells, Maine. However, what you will see is an extensive marsh, dense forest, and yes a small meadow at this dog friendly trail. It is also the home to wildlife including nesting Great Blue Herons, and deer. The trail is a moderate, approximately 1 mile hike in and out. The reason we rated it as moderate is because there are a lot of bog bridges to aid hikers over the wetlands, that may be difficult for some dogs. Also known as the Gowen Trail, this lightly used trail connects Meetinghouse Road to Clark Road.

On the September day we visited, we were pleasantly surprised to find a granite bench at the trail’s midpoint, perfect to pause and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. If you’re looking for an adventure, this may not be the spot for you. But if you’re in the area, and just want a quiet place to stop and contemplate nature, we recommend Ghost Meadow Wildlife Commons.

Dogs are allowed on-leash. Please be respectful of the wildlife that call this area home, as well as the private property that abuts it, and always carry out pet waste. Limited parking is available on Meetinghouse Road. Look for the Wells Conservation Commission sign for the exact location. For more trails, please visit our Dog Friendly Places reviews.

Stairs to help paws down the embankment from the parking area on Meetinghouse Road.
Lots of bog bridges built by volunteers, through the dense vegetation.
One of us had an easier time staying on the bog bridges than the other.
Happy to report no ghosts were seen at Ghost Meadows Wildlife Commons, just a relaxing walk through the woods. Happy Halloween!
