This week Asa and I competed in the ice dancing competition at the Dog Winter Olympics. Ice dancing is more than just gliding on the ice, it is as ethereal as ballet, with two bodies moving as one. There are no lifts above the head, no heroic jumps, just pure self-expression as we glide across the snow. However, it is also an incredibly difficult and precise sport. One misstep, and Golden dreams can come to a crashing end. Such was the case for Asa and me.
We started off out of sync on our opening woogles, one of the staples of any ice dance program, and just like that our routine fell part. We could hear the commentators describe our “heartbreaking” and “obvious” mistake. This made us begin to overthink our moves. Suddenly too many little mistakes were building up taking away precious technical points. I debated just abandoning our routine altogether and leaving the arena. But Asa insisted that we continue with the dance, encouraging me on every move. By the end of the short program we finally regained our composure to finish our dance with grace and elegance much to the delight of the cheering audience.
The following performance may not have been Gold worthy, but we still think it is pure Golden. We proudly share the video of our ice dance with you today.
