Golden Tail Wags Lighthouse Awards

Today is National Lighthouse Day! Over the years Angel Chuck Billy and I have visited many of Maine’s iconic lighthouses. Please join me for a special edition of the Golden Tail Wags Awards, where I celebrate some of our favorite Maine lighthouses.

The Blush of Dawn Award: Quoddy Head Light in Lubec is winner of the first lighthouse to greet the sunrise in the United States. It is located on the eastern most point in the United States.

Most Likely Place to Make New Friends: Portland Head Light, located at Fort Henry Park in Cape Elizabeth, is one of the most visited lighthouses in Maine. Once an entire bus load of tourists stopped to get selfies with us, as their road weary guide tried to wrangle them.

Most Recognized Lighthouse: Movie goers around the world have watched the iconic scene in Forrest Gump, where he ends his cross-country run at a lighthouse. Well that lighthouse is none other than the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde.

Square Peg in a Round World: Huey Lewis once sang “It’s hip to be square.” Fort Point Lighthouse in Stockton Springs knows what he’s talking about with its unique square shape!

Can’t Get There from Here: Off the coast of Kittery sits Whaleback Light. You can’t reach it from the mainland, but you can get a good view of it from Fort Foster. Alright true confessions, we were breaking the rules in this photo taken back in 2015, playing on the children’s only beach! Angel Chuck Billy was a bit of a rebel back then. The dog friendly area is down the path from here.

Least Likely to See a Lighthouse: Don’t be fooled by the name! There are NO lighthouses at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. You have to drive out of the park and down to the end of Two Lights Road to actually admire them from afar. One is still in use today, the other is a private home.

Short But Sweet: Bug Light in South Portland is one of Maine’s most elegant lighthouses with its unique Greek inspired design, but it received its nickname of “Bug Light” because of its small size. This year marks its 150th anniversary guiding ships in Casco Bay.

And since this post is becoming anything but short despite its sweet photos, I will end this special edition of the Golden Tail Wags Lighthouse Awards here. Happy Lighthouse Day!
