Gonic Trails in Rochester, NH, is an easy dog friendly hike with scenic views of a waterfall. Consisting of approximately 5 miles of trails, there are three trail options through the forest that lead to Isinglass River. On the day we visited, we followed Locke’s Loop (blue markers / 1.5 miles), then veered off to follow Isinglass Trail (yellow markers / 2 miles one way), before doubling back to finish Locke’s Loop. We decided to save Watson’s Way (red markers / 1.5 miles loop) for a future hike. If you’re hiking Locke’s Loop, there are interpretive maps at the trailhead that highlight interesting features along the trail including the site of the Watson Homestead, an abandoned road used in the 1800s, and the remains of a saw mill from the 1730s. Be sure to take a moment to enjoy the beauty of Isinglass Falls, but keep an eye on curious paws because the current can be swift and there are steep drop-offs along the trail.
Dogs are allowed on-leash. The well marked trails are maintained by Waste Management’s TREE program, and are easy to follow. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead for these popular trails. Our apologies there isn’t a video of this hike, but with temperatures hovering in the 30s, gloves were staying on!
