Great Pumpkin Pep Talk

Dear Great Pumpkin,

On this National Pumpkin Day, I’d like to give you a pep talk. After watching It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown for the umpteenth time, it has come to my realization I don’t know anyone who has actually met you. I can understand being shy, and not wanting to draw attention to yourself. But even my friend Bigfoot comes out of the shadows occasionally to be seen. I also understand you not wanting to be like those holiday heavy hitters, namely Santa and the Easter Bunny, who clearly have let their celebrity status go to their heads. I don’t blame you for not wanting to hang out at malls to have your photo taken with adoring fans. In fact, I find it admirable, that you keep your address private so folks don’t inundate you with letters demanding presents and candy.

Also after visiting a pumpkin patch, I can sympathize on the pressure to be perfect. Everyone there wanted the “perfect” pumpkin. But no one seemed to agree on what is perfect. No wonder you prefer to keep a low profile and only come out on Halloween night. Who can measure up to those high standards? But trust me, Great Pumpkin, you have nothing to worry about. Santa is far from perfect. As seen in those Rankin and Bass Christmas specials, he can be a little moody and judgmental. As for the Easter Bunny, clearly he has a few issues too. Why does he insists on hiding eggs? And where does a rabbit get that many eggs anyways! Great Pumpkin, just be yourself, and the world will embrace you. Just look at me, I lost an eye, and everyone still loves me for being me!

So this Halloween, as you search for the most sincere pumpkin patch, please know you are welcomed here. You don’t even need to bring that bag of toys that Linus talks about on the tv show. Sure, I may not have an actual pumpkin patch here. But thanks to my friends Sijan and Moose, we know that the spider recently spotted hanging out in our yard is a Pumpkin Spider. Maybe you already know my new spider friend, and sent him ahead of your visit to check things out? Well I can guarantee that when it comes to wanting to meet you, and just be friends, I am the most sincere.

Happy National Pumpkin Day! Happy Halloween!

Love, Asa
