Harbor Walk, Belfast, ME

Enjoy the sights and sounds along a working waterfront at the Harbor Walk and Armistice Footbridge in Belfast, Maine. Begin this scenic dog walk at the Armistice Footbridge which is dedicated to the soldiers of Waldo County who gave the ultimate sacrifice during WWI. Then continue this half mile walk through the Front Street Shipyard and Heritage Park, and finish at the popular Steamboat Landing Park.

What makes this waterfront walking trail unique is it is more than just a picturesque place for a stroll. It brings you through an active shipyard. On the day we visited we saw the finishing touches being put on a wooden boat, repairs being made to a ship, and a lobster boat being lowered into the water. This trail is also lined with “Museum in the Streets” signs, where we learned about Belfast’s brief shipbuilding boom following WWI, and that it was once known as the “Broiler Capital of the World.” Spoiler alert: according to the historical marker at it’s height during the 1950s 22,000 chickens were made ready for shipping worldwide at two poultry processing factories once located on this waterfront.

Dogs are allowed on-leash. Please be respectful while crossing the shipyard, and obey the detour if the gate across the walk is down. There is a small parking lot at the head of Armistice Footbridge located on Footbridge Road, and plenty of on-street and small lots for parking along Front Street in Belfast.
