Hiking Stop and Go

Our virtual vacation in Maine continues with a stop at Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Popular with tourists from around the world, the Jordan Pond Path is a moderately challenging dog friendly hike.  This loop trail is 3.2 miles with views of The Bubbles (South and North Bubble Mountains) and the pristine waters of the pond in the glacially carved valley.

Now whereas yesterday’s virtual hike at Cutler Preserve was far from the maddening crowd, Jordan Pond puts us right smack dab in the middle of it! When we visited in 2017, we found ourselves playing a game of Red Light/GreenLight. Whether we were stopping every few feet on the narrow trail to let other hikers pass, or to be petted by road weary tourists who missed their dogs back home, this hike took a lot more time than most of our adventures.

We purposely visited mid-morning on a rainy, foggy day and yet found the trail to be just as busy as if it was a beautiful fall day. However the slower pace wasn’t all bad. It gave us plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the views, while also meeting people from around the world. We even almost met a local resident, a beaver!

To access Jordan Pond Path, follow the signs at the Jordan Pond House. Dogs are allowed on-leash. Dogs are NOT allowed in the water, because Jordan Pond supplies the public drinking water. The rocky section of the trail, although brief, can be difficult for dogs not accustomed to the uneven terrain, and even seasoned hikers, such as ourselves, needed assistance maneuvering over the boulders in a few spots.

However by tagging along with us today on our Maine Virtual Vacation, you can avoid the crowds and difficult terrain by enjoying our video from 2017 from the comfort of your home or office. Oh and if you happen to have a blueberry muffin, we suggest eating that while watching our video. Grandpa loved the blueberry muffins at the Jordan Pond House restaurant.

In case you’re wondering, the bandage on Asa’s tail is from a hot spot. And yes, Asa did pick the music for our video!
