Located in York, Maine, the Hilton-Winn Preserve is a great place to hike with your dog.  Owned by the York Land Trust, the trail winds its way past low-lying forested wetlands with vernal pools, through dense upland forest, and over the Ogunquit River.  Traces of the Hilton and Winn families’ two centuries of ownership of these 175 acres are still visible.  Follow the 1.5 mile River Loop Trail back in history past the site of an abandoned milldam for a nineteenth century grist or sawmill, along a forgotten colonial road lined with field stones, and by the foundation for an old homestead.

Please note that there is no bridge and the river crossings can be difficult during spring thaws or after heavy rains.  Use caution when crossing the river during high water.  Also the preserve is home to diverse species including flying squirrel, snowshoe hare, river otter, and Northern goshawk.  There are also massive beaver dams.  Dogs should remain on leash or under voice command, and not to disturb the wildlife.
