Homeschooling: Science

Now that Asa is the ripe old age of 8 months, I need to advance his homeschooling beyond the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic.  So today we are going to do our first science lesson!  I decided it would be best to start with a simple chemistry experiment: Water + Dirt = Mud.

I am a strong believer in learning by doing, so I instructed my eager pupil to roll in the dewy morning grass.  A task that he was more than willing to do.  Then I guided him over to the patch of dirt in our yard and told him to repeat the task.  I couldn’t resist helping him with this stage to make sure he produced a sufficient amount of friction to create enough mud to understand the lesson.  Therefore, I wrestled with him on top of the dirt, making sure to keep my fur safely away from the mess.  A teacher must always look respectable, you know.  After a few moments of this, we have achieved our results – muddy puppy!

Mom continued the lesson inside with a bath to teach Asa that water not only causes mud, but it is a cleansing agent as well.  Today’s science lesson concluded with a demonstration on the power of wind, with the use of the hairdryer.  I have to admit that I am quite pleased with Asa’s curiosity about science and look forward to more such lessons.  Perhaps I underestimated my little brother?  Who knows, beneath that goofy exterior Asa may be the next Einstein!

A future Einstein, mastering his first science lesson.
