Today I am sharing the complete story of Chuck Billy’s awkward missteps with Santa. Over the years Angel Chuck Billy shared bits and pieces of this tale from his perspective, but for the first time here is the full story about how Chuck Billy ended up on the Naughty List!
It all began with a pom-pom hat way back in 2012. Chuck Billy was just one month shy of his first birthday, and bursting at the seams with the excitement of his very first Christmas. Mom and Dad decided to take him to the mall to get a selfie with Santa. Now at that point all our big brother Lemmy had told him was that Santa brings toys to good dogs. So of course when Chuck Billy saw the pom-pom on Santa’s hat, he instantly assumed it was a ball to play fetch with him. Well long story short, it wasn’t, and Chuck Billy’s enthusiasm to make it such didn’t go over well. Mom and Dad left the mall that day with a photo of a slightly disheveled Santa with his hands firmly around Chuck Billy’s neck.

But Chuck Billy was a puppy! Surely Santa would forgive him for that innocent mistake from a fetch obsessed puppy? Problem is that wasn’t the only mistake Chuck Billy made that year. You see Lemmy neglected to tell Chuck Billy that Santa visits in the middle of the night. Even at such a young age, Chuck Billy took his role as guard dog very serious. So of course he immediately leaped into action when he heard someone sneaking into our home via the chimney. It didn’t help that Chuck Billy insisted he was in the right, because Santa was technically breaking and entering. Making matters worse, he shared a photo of his bravery defending our home as his Christmas card the following year.

Which brings me to Chuck Billy’s distrust of elves. As with Santa, Chuck Billy also held a grudge against elves. He never admitted to the connection, but I believe his obsession with spying elves was due to the fact an elf was around with camera in hand to document his missteps as a puppy. At the mall it was an elf who snapped the incriminating photo, and an elf helping Santa that fateful night captured the unfortunate event on Christmas Eve. I don’t understand why Chuck Billy later included cats into that spy theory, but I’m sure he had his reasons.

After that Chuck Billy decided to lay low, and avoided Santa for years. However, after a considerable amount of time had passed, he felt like it was alright to let bygones be bygones. So he went back to the scene of the crime, the mall. Once again he patiently stood in a long line with a lot of other dogs for his Santa selfie. But this time was different. This time it was 2018, and he was an older, mature dog. Alright, Chuck Billy was still obsessed with fetch, but he only had eyes for bacon scented squeaky balls. Therefore, we all knew he wasn’t about to be tempted by Santa’s pom-pom hat. But there was one thing Chuck Billy didn’t factor in, Santa remembered him! As he approached for his photo, tail wagging and smile on his face, much to his amazement, Santa spun Chuck Billy around with a very firm grip, while giving an overly jolly smile for the camera! Ok, so afterwards Chuck Billy did admit he exaggerated a bit with his tongue. Santa wasn’t holding him that tight. But still, this was not the reconciliation photo that Chuck Billy had envisioned.

But have no fear! This is a Christmas story after all, and there is an unwritten rule that all Christmas stories must have a happy ending, even when it is a long time coming! Undeterred by the previous year’s experience, Chuck Billy returned to the mall. And that year, well there was something different about Santa. Neither of us could quite place our paws on it, but it was as if he was meeting Chuck Billy for the first time. There was no grudge! There were no hard feelings towards past puppy indiscretions. In fact, they kissed and made up!
