Today marks the start of Chinese New Year! Better yet, according to the Chinese zodiac calendar, it is the Year of the Dog! So I decided to do a little research to see what this all means. The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac, after the Rooster, and before the Pig. Which by the way, Cats came late to the planning party, and are therefore not included in the Chinese zodiac. Anyways, the Dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty, because they will never abandon their friends, family or work. People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature. They are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, venerable and have a strong sense of responsibility. Yep, that sounds about right. Let’s see what else I can dig up about this year dedicated to us.
According to my research, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunar cycle and takes place on a different date each year, but always between January 21 and February 20. Each new year is marked by the characteristics of one of the 12 zodiac animals: the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Dogs are the eleventh sign in the zodiac and are seen as independent, sincere, loyal and decisive, who aren’t afraid of difficulties in life. Due to these characteristics they also enjoy harmonious relationships with those around them. However, within the Chinese zodiac, Dogs are the most compatible with Rabbits. They’re attracted to the Rabbit’s kindness, while the Rabbit quietly offers Dogs sage advice. This could explain why Asa and my Rabbit cousins are such good friends.
The Year of the Dog occurs every 12 years, the last time was in 2006 and the next time will be in 2030. Traditionally Chinese New Year is celebrated with bell ringing, lighting firecrackers, watching traditional lion dances, and a feast with family. Asa is very excited about the dancing lion. However, I am looking forward to the feast, and on that note, I think it is time that I start celebrating! Happy Year of the Dog!
