Just an Ordinary Weekend

Heeding the warnings about social distancing, we stayed home this weekend. On Friday evening Mom and Dad happily discussed all the projects they’d like to do around the house that they’ve been putting off. I admit some sounded more fun than others. As Asa and I drifted off to sleep we looked forward to a weekend filled with a new routine.

Saturday morning began as it always does, with Asa waking up much too early. Thankfully, Mom played with him while Dad and I slept to a more appropriate time. When we finally got up, we went for our usual neighborhood patrol shift. After all, during these uncertain times there are some responsibilities we can’t skip. However, rather than stopping to chat with a neighbor raking leaves, we just gave a wag of our tails and kept on walking. We then enjoyed a hearty breakfast, and settled in to attend to more of our daily chores. I dictated to Mom my responses to my correspondence, while Asa kept Dad company as he worked on his online class.

Around midmorning Dad suggested he’d take us for a walk in our woods, and when we returned he and Mom could begin tackling that list of projects they’ve been putting off for so long. Mom agreed that was a good idea, but decided not to join us for the walk. Her doctor said she still needs to take it slow for another week. Instead she stayed inside and continued doing more of her usual Saturday chores.

When we returned from our adventure, it was evident that Asa and I needed baths. So once again Mom and Dad put off their new to-do list, while pampering us. Baths are exhausting work for everyone, including me, so it was little surprise we spent the remainder of the day in the living room watching movies together. Ok, so Mom and Dad never got to do those projects they planned, but it’s good to keep some semblance to normalcy, right? Besides, we had all day Sunday to do them now.

Sunday began just like Saturday, with loud thumping tail wags from Asa, while the rest of us tried to ignore him. Again, we went on neighborhood patrol, and were happy to see all was status quo. Although I did notice there were a lot fewer cars on the road. Next we enjoyed breakfast, and attended to my correspondence and Dad’s class. This was followed by Mom baking a cake to celebrate Maine’s birthday, while calling to check in on Grandma and a friend. Following her example, Dad also texted his buddies. Through it all, Asa and I supervised, adding our opinions and squeaks when appropriate.

This took more time than we all realized, and soon it was afternoon! Realizing that Asa and I have yet to play fetch, we all headed out to play in our yard. After all, we can’t let a weekend slip by without fetch! I’m happy to report, Mother Nature really cooperated, and sent us perfect weather. Even the snow in our backyard is almost completely melted unusually early this year. In the yard Mom and Dad noticed a few more things to add to their list of projects they’ve been putting off, while still managing to avoid actually doing any of it.

Soon it was Sunday evening, and once again we were gathered in the living room, tired from the day’s activities. Although none of us could really say what those “activities” were today. As Asa and I drifted off to sleep, we were thankful that despite staying home our routine remained relatively normal. We look forward to perhaps next weekend getting around to all those home projects Mom and Dad keep discussing, but we’re in no rush. It was nice to have an ordinary weekend.

How is it possible that in the 60 hours between 6:00 PM on Friday and 6:00 AM on Monday, we somehow didn’t have time for any of those home projects while still being at home? I better wake everyone up even earlier next weekend!
