Keay Brook Preserve, part of the Salmon Falls River Conservation Area in Berwick, Maine, is a great dog friendly hike. Dedicated in May 2016 by the Great Works Regional Land Trust, the trails are still under construction, but the main perimeter loop is ready for visitors. On the day we visited we enjoyed an easy 1.25 miles hike starting at Walnut Grove Trail and following the signs for the River Loop. Keay Brook Preserve consists of 86 acres, and the current trail is well marked, but it is easy to get confused in a couple spots. Look for the orange ribbons to stay on the trail. Winding along the Salmon Falls River, Keay Brook Preserve has scenic outlooks and many opportunities for birdwatching and to view wildlife, including beavers.
According to the trail map it is dog friendly. However, there is no mention of an on or off-leash policy. We kept our dogs on-leash because this was our first time there, and we weren’t sure what to expect for trail conditions, not to mention our dogs can’t resist a dip in the water despite the fact it was a frigid day in March when we visited. We did notice a lot of dog waste along the trail, so would like to remind hikers to please be respectful of the diverse wildlife and fellow hikers by cleaning up after your pet. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead for several cars.
