Yesterday Mom wrote about the upcoming Green Mountain Iron Dog Competition. But what she didn’t mention is that my brother Lemmy was an Iron Dog Champion! In 2008 he participated in the Working Dog Foundation’s Iron Dog. To this day we are still proud of what my goofy big brother accomplished that day. The following is the email Lemmy sent his biological Mom, Butter, telling her his exciting news:
Dear Momma Butter,
I won the Iron Dog Challenge! Well sort of… I came in second to last. But I totally beat a Beagle/Lab mix named Timothy! I even passed him on the course! And what a course it was! There were wooded trails to run, an agility course to conquer, streams to crawl through, and walls to jump! I could have really made time on the agility course, but unfortunately the rules called for all the dogs to be on their leads throughout the race, so I had to wait for Mike to catch up since he had to do all the things I did. Also, please don’t tell the judges, but we walked around the wall. I doubt Mike could have made it over, and it really didn’t seem worth the effort for me to try. There was also a place where Mike had to stop and shoot at targets. Don’t worry Momma Butter, as I explained repeatedly to Joy, they used paintball bullets not real ones. Again, I didn’t see the point in that since I was not allowed to shoot the gun. The course was a mile and a half, and we did it in 19 minutes! Not bad considering we have never done anything like that before.
Oh, and I almost forgot the best part – the Doggie Drag Race! After the trail run, at the end of the day they timed us individually running 100 yards. By that point in the day I had made a lot of friends, so everyone was cheering “Go Lemmy” as I raced down the field. I knew victory was mine! Ok, so Timothy wasn’t really a challenge there. He made the rookie mistake of chasing a tennis ball all afternoon, and was tired by the time of the drag race. But still I beat him! And I even beat a professional K9, Victor, who stopped to go to the bathroom! Third from last is pretty impressive!
I better go check on how Mike is doing.
Love,
Lemmy, Iron Dog Champion
