Long Sands Beach, located in York, Maine, is 1.5 miles of sandy beach with rocky areas and scenic views of Nubble Lighthouse. Depending on the time of day and season, this is a good place to bring your dogs. Dogs are allowed on the beach anytime between September 21 and May 19. During the Summer season, dogs are not allowed on the beach May 20 through September 20, between the hours of 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. However, the unique feature of Long Sands Beach is during the Summer dogs are allowed off leash on the beach between the hours of sunrise and 8:00 AM, as long as the owner is present and the dog responds to voice commands. So this is a great place to visit in the morning to tire out your dog with a long run before a fun day of sightseeing. But be sure to check the tide chart first! At high tide the sandy area is greatly reduced with only the rocky areas accessible in some spots. Another issue is although metered parking is available along Long Beach Avenue, it is a busy road and not the safest location to unload and load your dogs along the well traversed sidewalks. Other amenities include public restrooms, seasonal lifeguards, and there are plenty of takeout restaurants nearby for dining out with your dog.
