Maine Rocks

Asa and I wrap up our Maine Virtual Vacation with a trip to a beach that really rocks! Maine is known for it’s rugged, rocky coastline, but Jasper Beach, located in Howard Cove, Machiasport, rocks out to it’s own unique music.

Jasper Beach isn’t a sandy get away to spend the day. Rather this dog friendly scenic spot is an unique geological formation which is said to occur in only one other place on earth in Japan. Therefore, this beach entirely made of rocks is worth the trek off the beaten path to visit. Named for the millions of wave polished stones that cover this pocket beach, Jasper Beach doesn’t actually consist of jasper, but instead geologists insist most of the rocks are rhyolite.

Regardless of what the stones are, the music they make as the tide rolls in and out is hypnotic, and the sea caves that have formed in the bedrock surrounding the beach evoke daydreams of pirates visiting the coast.  In addition, beyond the steep rock dunes and storm berms are fresh and saltwater lagoons, making this a beautiful location to walk your dog.

But enough chatting! Lace up your sneakers and grab your leashes, we have a stroll to take at Jasper Beach!
