Massabesic Experimental Forest in Alfred, Maine

After being sidelined for over a year, here is our first new dog trail review for 2021! We visited the Massabesic Experimental Forest in Alfred, Maine. Now as you can probably understand “experimental forest” sure caught my attention. But you’re not going to find mad scientists lurking behind every tree, or monsters running amuck. What you will find is 1,754 acres with approximately 6 miles of trails to explore, that is being used for forest ecology and management, as well as research and demonstration.

Purchased in the 1930s, as an excellent example of regrowth in abandoned agricultural fields, the property was originally used to study the management of Eastern White Pines. But then fire swept through in 1947, destroying some areas while preserving other tracts. Today the Massabesic is a dynamic mix of new and old growth forest, with wetlands and vernal pools, and diverse wildlife who call it home.

On the day we visited we explored the Clayton Carl Trail which is an easy and quick walk in and out that connects the two parking area trail heads. From there we explored the B. C. Jordan and Littlefield trails, making for a fun approximately 2 miles hike. There are many other trail options making this perfect “choose your own adventure” hike to explore with your dogs. The only thing we didn’t enjoy on at Massabesic was the large amount of horse waste along the trail. So although dogs are allowed off-leash, you may want to keep them leashed to avoid a fragrant car ride afterwards.

Dogs are allowed under owner’s control, and dog waste must be removed. The trails we explored are marked, and easy to follow. Please stay on designated trails, respect the wildlife, do not pick the vegetation, and do not disturb the research being conducted at the Massabesic Experimental Forest. Parking is available at the trail head on Ida Jim Road in Alfred, Maine. For additional recommendations please visit our Dog Friendly Places reviews for more trails to explore in Maine and beyond.
