Mom, We Tried

For those of you who have been following us for awhile, you know that Dad has a habit of giving Mom boring and practical gifts.  Usually he gives Mom a kitchen appliance or something else that is very useful for daily chores.  The list of past Birthday, Christmas and Mother Day gifts include snow tires, a toaster, a new stove to replace the one Dad broke, and a vacuum.  Mom graciously received all these gifts with a smile.  In fact last year on Mother’s Day, Mom acted downright excited over the gift of an old fashion push lawnmower.  You know, the type with just two wheels, a blade, and no motor.  Ok, I admit Mom is weird and genuinely liked all these these gifts, especially the lawnmower.  However, this year Asa and I were determined to get Mom something that wasn’t practical!  Something that would be fun!  Something that we know Mom has wanted for a long time.  We wanted to get Mom an a-frame swing for the backyard!

Thanks to our good friend Sheba, we found out that the Tractor Supply Store had such a swing on sale!  It would be perfect!  Now Mom could relax in the yard while still throwing the ball for us to play fetch.  The only problem was convincing Dad to buy that for Mom.  Luckily as far as we could tell, all the current appliances were in good working order and none of them have recently burst into flames.  Not to mention in our opinion Mom had every practical item she could ever need.

So we started dropping subtle hints for Dad about this swing for the backyard.  We left a picture of it by our food bowls.  I barked whenever Dad drove by the Tractor Supply Store with us.  We even showed him Sheba’s tweet with the advertisement for the swing on sale.  Surely Dad couldn’t refuse our request!  Well he did.

Without further ado, here’s what Dad bought Mom for Mother’s Day from us – lawn chairs!  Yep, good old fashion, practical folding lawn chairs!  His rationale is they won’t take up space in the yard, and can be easily moved when Mom is using the lawnmower.  And you know what, once again Mom agreed they are a good gift!  She even added they would be great to take along on picnics!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom!  Thanks for once again putting on a brave face when it comes to Dad’s gifts.  We promise that someday, with our guidance he’ll get it right!  As for the lawn chairs, at least on the bright side Mom can comfortably sit while still playing fetch with us, which was our goal all along.

What we wanted to give Mom.

What we actually gave Mom.

Oh and Asa found another practical use. The chairs are good for shade in our sunny backyard after a long game of fetch.  PS: Mom the grass is looking a bit long here. Better take that push mower for a spin around the yard!
