Join us as we take a hike up memory lane at dog friendly Mount Agamenticus in York, Maine. Consisting of over 10,000 acres and 40 miles of trails ranging from easy to difficult, Mount Agamenticus offers endless opportunities for dog friendly hiking. On the day we visited in 2016 our dogs hiked the popular Ring Trail through dense forest and The Big A trail for summit views. The Ring Trail begins near the base of the mountain, and is approximately 2 miles of moderate to difficult hiking. The western portion is a gradual ascent with a few rocky areas, and the eastern section is steep and rocky. The Big A trail is a much easier walk that circles the summit. On a clear day there are views of the Isles of Shoals, Cape Elizabeth, Casco Bay, the Boston skyline, and the Presidential Range including Mount Washington.
Dogs must be on-leash, and as always please clean up after your pet. Also please respect the wildlife that calls this area home. The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region is the largest coastal forest from Acadia National Park to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, and is host to diverse wildlife and vegetation including 24 plants, 11 animals, and 9 plant communities that are listed as threatened or endangered in Maine. The Learning Lodge is open on a “pop up” basis in 2021 with kid friendly activities, and along the western side of the Ring Trail is the Story Walk. Picnic tables are available at the summit. Parking lots are located near the base of the mountain, as well as along the road leading to the summit. Informational kiosks with trail maps are available at the parking areas. The park itself is free, but donations are always welcomed.
