On this first day of spring, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about my winter neighborhood walks. Don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to spring and the reemergence of my neighbors who have been hunkered down in their homes these past few freezing months. But there’s a certain tranquil vibe in winter that brings out, shall we say, my more unique friends. These friends who don’t quite fit in with the others, and only come out when it is quiet. I feel like it is my responsibility to protect them, while on neighborhood patrol. However, today I’m revealing their secret in the hopes that it gains them more acceptance, and the freedom to walk among us in the sun.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the Bermuda Triangle, where mysterious events occur. In fact, all around the world there are triangles that have a paranormal vibe. My neighborhood is one of those places! In fact I have been keeping this secret in plain sight! Occasionally after snowstorms the plow drivers accidentally reveal the triangle on our street that acts as a portal welcoming these friends. But if you look closely, you can see I’ve gone through great lengths to make it look like a heart, so the neighbors, as well as the mail carriers and delivery drivers, don’t get suspicious.

This way my paranormal friends can feel comfortable maintaining their privacy. For example, Invisible Bigfoot can freely take walks every afternoon, leaving only the occasional footprint as proof that he passed this way. With so few people outside in winter, and those who are out are distracted by the weather, I’m pretty sure only my family notices his tracks.

Speaking of tracks, it is on morning walks in winter, that I find the telltale signs that a UFO may have parked alongside a neighbor’s truck overnight. Extraterrestrials can be rather shy, so like to come and go when no one is watching.

It’s a lot of responsibility though for me on neighborhood watch to keep track of these unique friends’ comings and goings. Thankfully, I have help keeping an eye on things. They sometimes even give me subtle hints on which direction to look, so I don’t miss anything.

However, now that spring is here, more neighbors will be outside. Gossiping Owls will be heard asking, “who?” at every strange sight. Squirrels will make my paranormal friends feel awkward by scurrying away as quickly as they can when they spot them. And humans just don’t know how to respect their privacy by no doubt alerting the media should anyone spot Bigfoot or the UFOs. So for now my paranormal friends will return to the shadows. But that’s ok, I know they are still there watching me.
